Guided Tour: 350 Million Years of Eggs

Embark on a journey through the history of the egg as our guide uses Naturama’s exhibited egg collection as a starting point for fascinating stories. Learn about everything from the age of dinosaurs to why egg colors vary so greatly, and get the answer to one of the most frequently asked questions: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

There are more than 400 registered bird species in Denmark, and the great variety in their eggs is easy to spot in the exhibited collection at Naturama.

But the story of the egg begins long before the time of birds—actually, we have to go even further back than the age of dinosaurs.

Today, we often associate eggs with birds, but in reality, many other animals lay eggs. Some snakes, for example, as well as other reptiles and amphibians, also lay eggs—not to mention fish. A great example is certain species of sharks, which are believed to have emerged around 420 million years ago.

So, the history of the egg is a bit more complex than one might think.
